چکیده

Intergenerational Education Transmission: Neighborhood Quality and/or Parents’ Involvement? We develop a model that analyzes the impact of residential neighborhood and parents’ involvement in education on children’s educational attainment and test it using the UK National Child Development Study. We find that the better the quality of the neighborhood, the higher the parents’ involvement in children’s education, indicating cultural complementarity. For high-educated parents, the child’s educational attainment is more affected by the parents’ involvement than by the neighborhood quality while, for low-educated parents, the neighborhood quality seems to play the major role. Empirical measurement of this response is complicated by neighborhood selection: through their residential location choices, parents have some control over neighborhood quality. To deal with neighborhood selection, I make use of the mass closures of public housing projects in Chic...

Family structure and the intergenerational transmission of educational advantage.

I examine whether the effect of parents' education on children's educational achievement and attainment varies by family structure and, if so, whether this can be explained by differential parenting practices. Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, I find that as parents' education increases, children in single mother families experience a lower boost in their achiev...

Intergenerationalities: Some Educational Questions on Quality, Quantity and Opportunity

This paper raises a number of issues in thinking about and addressing the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage. Starting with choice subject to constraints by parents as determining outcomes for children, the paper identifies sequences of interventions to relieve “binding constraints” in the expansion of education. But the fact that parents choose for children is shown to raise a numb...
